On April 30, 2026, the Belgian government has announced that it is considering the potential transfer of Engie’s nuclear operations to a new Belgian nuclear company.
This company will be similar to NEO NL, the holding company established by the Dutch government to coordinate the construction and operation of future Dutch reactors.
The scope of this transfer will potentially include :
- – the 7 nuclear reactors
- – all nuclear activities of Engie and its subsidiaries
- – all assets related to these activities, including nuclear provisions
- – the 50% stake in BE NUC
- – Electrabel’s subsidiaries in the nuclear sector, namely Synatom, Belgonucléaire, and BE NUC
- – Engie’s nuclear personnel
The project schedule is as follows:
- 1. Feasibility study on technical aspects, financial, legal, etc.
- 2. Negotiations to define terms acceptable to both parties
- 3. Heads of terms by October 1, 2026
But the first decision – the one that 100TWh was waiting for since its legal action – is the immediate suspension of all decommissioning work, including that of Tihange 1, which was scheduled to begin next Monday.
